How can you Find More Storage in a Small Rental Home?

small rental home

Rental homes are limiting in comparison to owning a home but they are nice for those that can’t afford to buy or aren’t ready yet. One of the drawbacks is that rental homes don’t always come with adequate storage like a typical house does. When a regular house comes with a basement and attic while your rental home was a home split into a duplex, you are more limited than intended.

There are some ways to utilize the storage you already have without these things, like by storing things under the bed or renting an additional storage unit. Here is a look at how to max out your space in a small rental house.

Maybe it’s Time to Declutter

Before beginning, it might be time to declutter what you already have. Perhaps you have clothes you haven’t worn in years or duplicate items in the house. If you have furniture that you planned to refurbish or a bulky couch, maybe it’s time to part with some items that are making your life too crowded.

Spend a weekend decluttering the drawers and closets so that you can see what space you have to work with. Sell or donate anything you aren’t using and eliminate as much clutter as you can to simplify your life.

Walls or Doors

Did you realize you can store items on your doors and walls? It may seem strange to store things on the foundation but in reality, wall and door storage is some of the easiest ways to gain your floor or counter space back. Get small shelves and hooks to free up space and pick up an over-the-door shoe organizer for every room. It’s a great way to organize shoes, cleaning supplies and toiletries.

Back of the Closet

Have you looked through the closet to make sure you’re using all of the space? Maybe if you place a narrow bookshelf in the very back to stack wrapping paper and camping gear or use the very top of the closet by hanging hooks and nails to store more stuff.

Be sure to utilize the space under your bed by storing stuff in totes and vacuum sealed bags with clothing and if needed, rent a storage unit for a monthly fee to hold bigger items.
